Exactly. White people will only acknowledge Asian Americans as “American” when its for their own convenience but never for ours. When Mirai Nagasu landed her triple axel or when Chloe Kim won gold on the halfpipe, white people were all like, “Yes, Team USA! An AMERICAN did that! Respect for MY president!” You know all that bullshit white people be saying nowadays lmao.
But as soon as Asian Americans accomplish something for themselves, white people are all like, “Of course you did, you’re Asian!” You see how different they talk about you when you do something for yourself versus when you do something for them?
And to go back to Mirai, some cracker referred to her as an immigrant then tried to bring up irrelevant ass shit when she got called out on it. There’s nothing wrong with being an immigrant but not every person is an immigrant just because they’re Asian.
So honestly, it doesn’t matter what you do. White people will never see Asian Americans as an “American” because in the back of their minds, that’s reserved for whites only.
And two things to get you thinking a little bit. 1) If someone asked, “What are you?” What’s the first answer you give them? And 2) When you hear the word “American,” do you think of yourself or other Asian people? If you actually have to think about it or hesitate, then that tells you right there that you don’t feel like an “American.” And if you don’t feel like something, then you shouldn’t have to identify with it or label yourself as it. Ever.
